Live camera scanning fails more often than people expect: glare on a glossy label, a code behind shrink wrap, a curved bottle, or simply a laptop camera that cannot focus close enough. Working from a still image solves most of those problems at once, because a photo can be taken at the best possible angle, cropped, brightened and retried as many times as you like without holding anything steady. It is also the only option when the barcode exists purely as a file — inside a scanned delivery note, a supplier PDF or a screenshot someone sent you.

Why an image often beats the live camera
A live scan has to succeed in the moment; a photo can be retaken, cropped and corrected. That difference matters most with the labels that give scanners trouble — a foil pouch that reflects the ceiling light, a code printed across the curve of a jar, or faded thermal print on an old carton.
Images also make collaboration possible. A colleague in a warehouse can photograph a carton label and send it, and whoever needs the number reads it from their desk rather than walking the floor.
How to read a barcode from an image
Open the barcode scanner and switch to image input, then drop in your file. The decoder locates the symbol, reads it and displays the number, along with the symbology it detected so you can confirm it matches what you expected.
If the first attempt fails, crop the image tightly around the barcode and try again. Removing the surrounding packaging artwork gives the decoder far less to search through and often turns a failed read into an instant one.
Taking a photo that will actually decode
Hold the camera square to the label rather than at an angle, and fill most of the frame with the barcode plus a small margin of white on each side — that quiet zone is part of the symbol and cropping into it causes failures that look mysterious otherwise. Tap to focus before shooting, and check the bars look sharp when you zoom in on the result.
Avoid the phone's flash on glossy packaging; it creates a hotspot right in the centre of the label. Angling towards indirect light gives a much cleaner image than firing a flash straight at a reflective surface.
Barcodes inside scanned documents and PDFs
Delivery notes, shipping labels and warehouse paperwork frequently carry barcodes that end up scanned into a document archive. Export the relevant page as an image at a good resolution — 300 dpi or better if the scanner offers it — and crop to the barcode before decoding.
Low-resolution scans are the usual failure point. At 150 dpi a dense Code 128 symbol may have fewer than two pixels per narrow bar, which is below what any decoder can resolve reliably. Rescanning at higher resolution beats any amount of image processing afterwards.
Examples from everyday work
A returns clerk photographs each incoming carton label instead of typing the reference, cutting both time and transcription errors out of the process. A buyer checking a supplier's product sheet decodes the EAN printed in the PDF to confirm it matches the item they were quoted.
A small retailer sent a photo of a damaged shelf label to head office; the barcode was still readable in the image even though the printed label was too scuffed for the shop's handheld scanner.

What image formats work?
PNG, JPG and WebP all decode. PNG is preferable for screenshots and scanned pages because it avoids compression artefacts around the bar edges.
Why does my photo fail when the barcode looks fine?
Most often the quiet zone was cropped away or the image is too low resolution. Re-crop with a clear white margin either side of the bars and make sure the bars are visibly sharp when zoomed in.
Can I read a barcode from a PDF?
Export the page as an image at 300 dpi or higher, crop to the barcode, then decode that image. Low-resolution exports are the main reason PDF barcodes fail.
Do I need to allow camera access?
No. Image scanning uses only the file you provide, so no camera permission is requested and none is required.
Which symbologies are recognised?
