Choosing the right symbology for a retail product
EAN-13 is the default for products sold outside North America, and UPC-A covers the same job in the United States and Canada; both encode a GS1-issued number that identifies the manufacturer and the specific item. EAN-8 exists for packaging too small to carry a full thirteen-digit symbol, such as a lip balm or a single-serve sachet, and it needs its own separately allocated short number rather than a trimmed version of your EAN-13.
Code 128 is the right choice when the barcode is not going through a retail checkout — internal SKUs, case labels, marketplace fulfilment identifiers. It accepts letters as well as digits and packs them densely, which is why fulfilment centres tend to prefer it for carton labels while the consumer-facing unit keeps its EAN.
How to generate a product barcode step by step
Open the barcode generator, select the symbology that matches where the product will be scanned, then type or paste the number. For EAN-13 enter the first twelve digits and let the tool compute the thirteenth check digit, or paste all thirteen and confirm the tool accepts them — a mismatch means a transposed digit somewhere upstream in your product data.
Set the bar height and module width for the label you are printing, keep the quiet zone clear on both sides, and export SVG. Hand the SVG to your label printer or drop it into the packaging artwork; PNG is fine only when the artwork is destined for a screen mock-up rather than a plate.
Why the check digit matters more than the artwork
The final digit of an EAN or UPC is arithmetic, not decoration: it is derived from the preceding digits, and a scanner recalculates it on every read. If it does not match, the scan is rejected outright, which is why a barcode that looks perfect can still fail at the till after a single typo three digits earlier.
Generating from your master product spreadsheet rather than retyping numbers by hand is the single biggest reduction in barcode errors most small brands make. When you have dozens of SKUs to produce, export the codes in one pass and proof them against the source list before anything reaches a print run.
Print quality, sizing and the mistakes that kill a scan
Retail symbols have a nominal size and a permitted magnification range; shrinking an EAN-13 far below about 80% of nominal narrows the bars past what a fixed-position checkout laser resolves reliably. Print at 100% when you have the space, and if the packaging is genuinely tight, move to EAN-8 rather than squeezing a thirteen-digit symbol.
Contrast matters as much as size. Dark bars on a light background is the only combination guaranteed to work — red bars are effectively invisible to older red-laser scanners, and printing on a glossy metallic substrate can bounce enough light back to defeat the reader. Leave the bars black, keep the background pale and uncoated where you can, and always test a production sample rather than an inkjet proof.

A coffee roaster with eight blends allocated a GS1 prefix, generated eight EAN-13 symbols, and dropped each SVG into the existing bag artwork template — no repositioning needed because the vector scaled cleanly to the reserved panel.
